Authorities were called to the 900 block of East Westmoreland Street just after midnight, the department told Daily Voice.
They arrived to find a man in his 30s wrapped in a blanket and stuffed into a shopping cart with "injuries to his face and blood around his eye and mouth," officials said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by EMTs, police said.
Detectives said there was a trail of blood leading from the cart to a nearby home on the 3300 block of H Street. The people in that house were "transported to the Homicide Unit for further investigation," but no arrests have been made, the department said.
The case remains under investigation, they added.
